Mathcounts
Advisor:  Kim Gall (ext. 5055)

The mission of MATHCOUNTS is to increase the enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States.  With that goal in mind, the MATHCOUNTS School Handbook is created and distributed free of charge to middle schools across the country.  The material in the handbook provides the basis for teachers and volunteers to coach student Mathelets on problems solving and mathematical skills.

Students from all teams, A through H, and from the 7th and 8th grades participate in Mathcounts.  The scheduled times are the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month from 2:45 to 3:45.  The purpose of the meetings is to practice different problem-solving strategies.  The Mathcounts organization has provided a booklet of practice problems for the students to study.  In February, 8 students will have the opportunity to represent Saline Middle School at a regional competition.

Middle School Fiddle Club

Group for students in grades 7/8 who play violin, viola, cello or bass to learn how to play and perform folk fiddling music. The emphasis will be on learning how to play folk fiddling music from allover the world as well as each of the regional American styles. Students participate in three major concerts during the year.

Sign-up is through Community Education, 429-8020.  Participation fee required. 

Middle School Jazz Band

Do you like to play jazz, swing, funk, blues and rock music? Then, you'll love the Jazz Band. Jazz band is open to all 7th and 8th grade students who play clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, guitar, bass, piano and drum set.

Sign-up is through Community Education, 429-8020.  Participation fee required. 

Quiz Bowl

Quiz Bowl is a trivia game played on teams and is open to ALL students.  Everyone is welcome regardless of skill level or level of commitment.  Some people just come to play with us occasionally; others want to take on the challenge of competition.  Players buzz in to answer tossup questions, and the team works together to answer bonus questions.  If you like Jeopardy, you 'll LOVE Quiz Bowl.  Keep in mind that nobody knows every answer, to win a match, you and your teammates just have to know slightly more than the other team or be faster on the buzzer. For anyone who enjoys a challenge and likes to have fun Come Join Us!

There is an annual tournament with the regional schools. The tournament is fun and non-competitive. 

Science Olympiad
Advisors:  Marcy McCormick (ext. 5044) and David Yon (ext. 5065)

SO is a nationally recognized competition. Olympiad events are designed to use a variety of intellectual and practical skills. Some events require a quick recall of specific facts, while others require concept development, a process skill or an application of a specific concept. Some events require students to build an apparatus. Check the website at www.soinc.org.  

STAND
Advisor:  Jennifer Nelson (ext. 5049)

"Students taking a New Direction" is a feeder group for Students Against Drunk Driving at the high school. Open to all students. Meets after school every other week. They plan activities to help students make a good decision, have fun and stay away from drugs.

Landscaping Club
Advisor:  Nancy Rodgers (ext. 5056)

Enjoy working outside?  Come join this group of students and parents who want to keep the outside of our school looking great.  Plant bulbs, pull weeds, trim hedges, HAVE FUN!

        SMS Drama Club

         Advisor:  Kristin Glatz (ext. 5069)

All interested 7th and 8th grade students who are interested in theater and drama can come join the fun, be silly, make friends, and be part of a group where everyone is accepted for who they are!!!  The SMS Drama Club meets every other Friday after school from 3:00pm to 4:00pm in Room O-104 near the gym.  Questions can be directed to Ms. Glatz at glatzk@saline.k12.mi.us.
