Elective Courses

 Elective Course Offerings

Students will take math, science, social studies, English/Language Arts and two elective Courses. Elective classes will run all year and be on an alternating day schedule.  This schedule will allow greater continuity of services between Saline Middle School and Saline High School.    For the most recent changes to the Elective options, please preview the following video clip.

Art

Would you like to make creatures from clay, vases and bowls with beautiful colors and patterns?  How about dreamscape scenes made from photographs, or paintings that seems to jump off the wall?  You could make stunning faux "stained glass" designs, abstract sculpture, collagraph prints, zoetrope animated cartoons and more.  You will also be building on your perspective drawing skills.  Instead of taking notes, we draw, draw, draw to communicate ideas for bigger and more complicated solutions.  Use more of the right side of your brain and take art. You won't regret it!

Band                   [MS Band Website]

The band program is open to all students who play a wind or percussion instrument.  In this class, you will improve your technique, range, sight reading and ensemble rehearsal skills.  Students will learn music theory, explore different musical styles and create projects combining music, art and history.  You will perform in small ensembles with your friends and learn how to compose your own music.  This class incorporates a variety of experiences including marching, solos and ensembles, festivals and evening concerts.  Band students will learn to march and will participate in local parades.  You will also perform in a variety of concerts including the Collage Concert, Festival and Band-O-Rama.  You will have the opportunity to perform solos and ensembles at Solo and Ensemble Festival, as well as audition for the All State Honors Band.

Choir

The seventh and eighth grade choirs are open to all students who have a love of singing.  In the seventh grade, students will learn to sing primary and intermediate level two and three part music.  In the eighth grade, students will learn intermediate and advanced level three and four part music.  Learning to sing in a choir requires development of skills in music reading and theory and the ability to blend the voice with others in the ensemble.  Highlights of the year include October, December, March, and May concerts, participation in District and State Choral festivals at locations around the state of Michigan, Solo & Ensemble Festival, Collage Concert, and presentation of a Broadway musical every other year.  Students will also have the opportunity to audition for the State Honors Choirs, carol at community holiday events, and perform community service singing at the Saline Senior Center.

Orchestra           [MS Orchestra Website]

The orchestra program is open to students who play violin, viola, cello or bass. This ensemble provides students with a variety of performing opportunities; including string orchestra, full orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solos.   You will improve your technique, sight reading, as well as ensemble rehearsal skills.  Students in the orchestra program will also learn music theory, explore different musical styles, and create projects using music, art and history.  You will get to perform in small ensembles with your friends and compose your own music.  Orchestra students will participate in a variety of concerts such as the Collage Concert, Festival, and String-Fling.  You will get to perform solos and ensembles at solo and ensemble festival, as well as audition for the All State Honors Orchestra.

Drama

Are you nervous about speaking in public?  Are you shy and want to be more confident?  Do you like being the center of attention?  Are you looking for a class that lets you move around, try new things, express yourself, and have fun?   If you answered YES! To any of the above questions, Drama Class is for you.  In drama class we learn about acting through improvisation and scene work.  We talk about the different aspects of a theater production including sets, costumes, props and others.  We learn about how a play is created from a script and how we create characters and bring those characters to life.   In addition, drama can teach us many skills we can use in the real world.  We will learn how to be comfortable in front of an audience, how to be confident, and how to speak loudly and clearly so that everyone understands what we have to say.  Drama teaches us how to be creative, how to work together, and how to treat others with compassion and respect.

Intro to Business Technology

Do you like working with computers?  Do you want to find ways to make computers work for you?  Then sign up for Business Technology as your elective choice.  All students that take Technology make creative projects with common applications that are most often available on any computer.  Exploration of standard computer tools, their purpose, and how they function will put the power of the computer at your fingertips.  You will work with Internet search techniques, Internet safety, and reinforce your keyboarding skills (including the number keypad).  You will be encouraged to become knowledge seeking, self-taught learners so as to keep up with advancing technologies, get the maximum benefits from computer use, and enhance learning in all other classes by utilizing technology.   Use Microsoft Office Suite, create Flash animations, and learn simple video game creation software, basic computer programming, video production claymation, or simple robotics in the Technology elective!

Multimedia Communication

Create, communicate and collaborate in the Web 2.0 class.  Learn a variety of tech tools and skills that will help you in school and beyond.  Have fun creating online radio shows, digital storytelling, doing video production, and green screening.  create a digital portfolio of your work using blogs and your own website.  Explore your creativity by designing animations, photo editing and video game creation.  See the best of what the web has to offer and learn the techniques to getting the tools to work for you.

Woods              [Woods Website]

Students who take the woods elective will be able to enjoy the satisfaction of planning and building a product with their own hands.  Learning to work with tools and machines is a valuable skill.  You will learn good safety habits to be able to use the wood shop's tools and machines, such as lathes, saws, sanders, and drills to build your own products.  You will build a stool, and then choose your own project to create, such as bowls, puzzles, baseball bats, shaker style coffee tables, sofa or end tables, clocks, gun or bow racks, and whatever else you can come up with.

World Languages     [WL Doc]

The World Language Department is happy to offer the opportunity to middle school students to earn high school credit in French, German, and Spanish.  Students may earn one high school credit by successfully completing a 7th and 8th grade world language class.

All the world language classes introduce students to the four major language skills.

FRENCH - Take French and learn the world’s second most popular international language!  During the first three weeks, you will concentrate on conversation skills. You receive a French name and learn to count, greet friends, tell time and learn how to order food and beverages in a French cafe. This course continues with a grammatical approach to the language through the use of games, projects, skits, and both individual and partner activities. You will have vocabulary and verb study, oral drills, practice in sentence structure, translation, and short cultural readings.   There will be cultural activities like tasting French Food.  Your teacher will also speak French in class.  Humor is a big part of Madame's class,  so come prepared to experience the "joie de vivre" while learning French.   Let sing, dance, laugh and eat quiche!

[French, the World Language Doc]                    [French Foreign Exchange Program - Flyer]

GERMAN - When you begin in German class, you will first receive German names, learn basic skills such as greeting friends, and learn to count and spell in German. You will learn basic vocabulary, elementary grammar and sentence structure.  In German class you will get to participate in various practice drills, songs, games and short sketches. You will also be able to take part in various activities in the German exchange program.  You might even go on a trip to Germany!

SPANISH - This elective course begins with conversation work in which students receive new names in Spanish and learn such things as how to greet friends, how to count and how to tell time. Other class work involves vocabulary study, oral drills, grammar and sentence structure exercises, translation, and short cultural readings.
