The Houghton Food Service Staff prepares nutritious affordable lunches daily. The focus in the school lunch program is on providing tasty, well-balanced meals, while reducing fat, sugar and sodium. At Houghton School, lunch consists of an entree for the day, (a peanut butter sandwich is offered as an alternative to the entree of the day) plus self-serve fruit and vegetable choices, and milk or juice as a beverage. Elementary lunches cost $1.75 a day, including beverage. Separate or additional beverage may be purchased for 35 cents. Super Lunches cost $2.25.

Applications for free and reduced lunches are available in all school offices and may be submitted at any time a family has a change in income that would qualify the family for free or reduced lunches. Applications are sent home with all students the first week of school. Students who were receiving free or reduced priced lunches the previous year are continued on the program for two weeks after the start of the school year to allow time for new applications to be reviewed and processed.

Technology has enhanced the Food Service Department accounting system for school lunch records and purchases. Each customer has his/her own lunch account with an identifying bar code. This method provides improved accountability for state and federal reporting, as well as convenience for parents making payments.

How to pay for lunches...

Students should bring check or money for deposit in an envelope marked with the student's name to the classroom. Deposits may be made in any amount, but no charge is given. Students are encouraged to make yearly, semester or monthly deposits. Weekly deposits should be sent on Mondays when possible. ($140 is an approximate semester deposit.)

Students are expected to maintain a positive balance in their accounts in order to purchase lunches or beverages. Students who do not have money in their lunch accounts are expected to bring lunch from home. Account balance reports are sent home at report card time, or parents may check an account balance at any time by calling the food service office at Houghton.

Monthly lunch menus are published in school newsletters and are available by calling the lunch line. Questions and comments about the lunch program may be directed to the Food Service Supervisor at (734) 429-8045.
