Middle School Philosophy
At Saline Middle School we believe that middle level education must respect the unique developmental issues facing early adolescents. These students are experiencing multiple changes causing them to face many life changing challenges. As educators, we feel it is our responsibility to educate the whole child, not just teaching information, but teaching life lessons that will assist them in becoming successful adults.
We accomplish this by delivering a program that involves:
-
A challenging academic program designed to encourage our students to think deeply, build skills as well as make connections. We encourage our students to delve into subjects and concerns that interest them as well as expecting them to achieve at a high level. Interdisciplinary teaming this allows us to make our school "smaller" by creating smaller learning communities. It also allows us to teach students in a way that builds links between the disciplines (subjects) they are learning. In this way their growing mental abilities are challenged and a more accurate view of how the world work is facilitated.
-
Flexible block schedule allows our teachers the ability to flex their time to better fit instruction. It puts instruction as the critical ingredient in determining how the day progresses. Effective and thorough instruction involves allowing students to not only learn facts but construct new knowledge. This discovery process requires time. Providing choices both in the classrooms in the types of projects they attempt as well as in the types of elective classes they take. As we are able we will expand these choices to reflect areas that will help them explore new areas and prepare them for more in depth high school classes. Choices also pertain to after school activities where we encourage the ongoing development of clubs and activities that respond to a wide variety of interests and talents.
-
Encouraging a healthy lifestyle by supporting physical fitness, educating all students about interpersonal communication, decision making, peer pressure, and taking ownership and responsibility for their actions.
-
A supportive counseling program that addresses the developmental concerns specific to adolescents as well as helping them grow in their understanding of themselves and their goals for the future. Our counselors meet with students on an individual and group basis, doing specific groups to help students through difficult times as well as building career awareness.
-
Classroom presentations are also a critical part of this program.
-
Advocating for students is critical during this developmental stage. We accomplish this by using our teams as a way of getting to know students better, providing time during the school day for team building activities, and providing a wide variety of services to address those students who are at risk.
These include:
-
InGear program an after school alternative program for students who are struggling in school academically, socially, behaviorally or with their attendance. It involves tutoring, counseling, service and reality based education. It is taught by two teachers in the school
-
Summertime Challenge a summer program to build connections, develop self esteem, and set and accomplish goals. The program lasts for four weeks and involves fitness activities, reality based education, counseling and a ropes course experience. It is taught by two teachers. A separate program exists for incoming 7th and incoming 8th graders.
-
Saline Middle school also offers special education and Section 504 services for those students who are eligible. |
